I read a great article written by Jonelle Marte for The Wall Street Journal. This article, titled “An Internship From Your Couch,” discusses the increasing popularity of virtual internships.
At GoliathJobs, we work closely with career service centers and employers nationally in order to assist in their ongoing missions. On a daily basis we see that virtual internships are becoming very popular. For years colleges requried interns to actually work at an employer’s location. Now they are starting to see that it is not always necessary and, in fact, this opens up the door for more opportunities for their students.
GoliathJobs itself is even practicing this around the country. We employ many interns for various purposes and we can easily measure their performance whether they work virtually or in one of our offices.
In the early 90s my previous company, Goliath Technology, was practicing “virtual internships” with marketing students. Their function was to connect with local businesses and corporations in the towns surrounding their campus. Glad to see we were ahead of our time.
