Resume Fraud, No One Wins!

Michele O'Connor, GoliathJobs.comby Michele O’Connor

Resume fraud is a major issue facing employers & recruiters every day. Verification is one of the key value-added-services of our business because of this issue. There is a heightened need to not only extrapolate qualified candidates from the crowd but to also hire the honest ones.

A current industry trend says that “2/3 of resumes received today are inaccurate.” As an employer or recruiter you are not aware of the inaccuracies until you conduct your diligence. This means reading the resume, conducting the first interview and then running your fact finding mission. It is only after all these time consuming and expensive steps that you will find the fraud buried into the text of the resume.

Why does this happen?

Job seekers do desperate things. When the sea is full of candidates, like it is today, people tend to panic. They start to question their education, experience and even their hobbies. They feel that an impressive resume despite the errors will get them in front of the employer. Once in the door, they assume that their wonderful personality will win them the job with the lies or embellishment being overlooked. Those notions are completely incorrect and they only hurt themselves in the long run.

If an employer has spent time & energy on an application and they find out that the resume is full of holes, they will reject the candidate completely and most likely prohibit future applications from that same person. 99.9% of employers will always be attracted to resumes that have some sort of verification method included. GoliathJobs, JobsOver50 & Resumefit are good examples of this.

Resume fraud - no one wins! Candidates will reduce their chance of landing a good job and employers waste time & money in the process.

Eavesdropping in the Office Creates Fear

Michele O'Connor, GoliathJobs.comby Michele O’Connor

“Fears Make Offices All Ears” is a great article written by Dana Mattioli from the Wall Street Journal. Fears about layoffs and corporate restructuring have left employees more attentive to what’s going on around them. “While workplace eavesdropping has been going on for ages, fears about layoffs and corporate restructuring have left employees more attentive to what’s going on around them. And as employees resort to eavesdropping, human-resources professionals say they are encountering cases of rumor-spreading in the workplace more frequently,” says Ms. Mattiolo. Challenges & Opportunities for 50+ Job Seekers

David Mezzapelle - Founder, GoliathJobs.comBy David Mezzapelle

There has been much buzz surrounding the explosive growth of the Baby Boomer & Retiree segments of our population. Today, when combining the state of the economy with this population shift, the topic of employment is certainly the most popular. To get a feel for the impact, here are some powerful statistics:

-The 50+ demographic will grow by 49.1% for the next few years, 5 times the growth rate of the rest of the US workforce.
-From 2004 - 2010 workers aged 35 - 44 will decline by 19%, workers aged 45 - 54 will increase by 21% and workers aged 55 - 64 will increase by 52%.
-Boomer spending is projected to increase $800 billion to over $4.6 trillion by 2015.
-Boomers are the highest earners, best educated & largest home ownership group of any generation to-date.

Boomers (people born between 1946 - 1964) control the lion’s share of the population and will do so for the next 30+ years. They are a major driver of our economy. They also have needs including retirement. However, after completing extensive market research it became clear to us that today’s 50+ population wants to continue working past retirement. Advancements in healthcare as well as improved nutrition & exercise are allowing people to work past 65. Most cite the need for income (84%), boredom avoidance (78%) and health coverage (56%) as the reasons to continue working.

The good news is that working past retirement, even 2-3 years, can result in a dramatic improvement to a 401(k) balance, higher Social Security benefits and less dependency on savings. Plus, the ability to continue exercising the mind can actually extend one’s life.

So what opportunities exist and where?

Companies that embrace the talent & experience of our 50+ population will win in the competitive global marketplace. They are finally realizing that their longevity is contingent on understanding these trends. As a result, companies are starting to develop programs to hire & retain 50+ workers. This is easy to do because 50+ workers bring a lot to the table. They are loyal, possess significant interpersonal skills and are flexible in terms of schedules, benefits & pay. They are also tech savvy; In 1990 the desk of every 40-year old worker had a PC. Those same workers are now 59 with 19 years of computer experience and have been online since the advent of the web.

50+ job seekers can turn to head hunters, staffing agencies and even classifieds. Online services such as JobsOver50.com and AARP do a great job as well.

Another powerful resource for job seekers is their Alma Mater. Schools & alumni associations across all education levels are starting to pay close attention to the employment needs of 50+ alumni. These are great venues for job seekers to go for job search as well as up-to-date advice and best practices. Many schools even offer “lifetime career services” in their mission statements. Thanks to the proliferation of social & professional networks and web-based alumni associations, more & more alumni are connected to their schools daily. These networks are also the perfect place for employers to post their jobs into a sea of talent.

There are certainly challenges facing 50+ job seekers today. However, their mass, experience & talent yields an opportunity to drive the US workforce to new heights. We will see a significant economic recovery as employers embrace this growing trend.

Where Are The Jobs? They Must Be Somewhere!

Jennifer Porter, GoliathJobs.comBy Jennifer Porter

While the employment landscape looks sparse right now, the outlook for 2009 isn’t uniformly bleak — and is downright bright in some recession-resistant industries. This trend was recently cited in the Wall Street Journal. At GoliathJobs we are seeing that same trend. Certain hot industries are doing well and still hiring. Healthcare, engineering and others are very impressive and will be for quite some time. Also, public & private projects funded by stimulus grants as well as “green” industries are garnering much attention as well.

“Employers that provide necessary products and services — hospitals and insurers, for example — tend to always need recruits. And areas employers deem critical to their survival, like accounting and information technology, rarely get cut. What’s more, some fields, such as bankruptcy law and crisis-management consulting, are thriving because of the downturn.” Read the entire article by clicking here.

GoliathJobs Featured School of the month - Grace Institute

GoliathJobs Featured School of the Month– Grace Institute

GoliathJobs Featured School of the Month is Grace Institute in New York City. Grace Institute’s tuition-free business and job training program for women changes lives by increasing employment options and ensuring employability even in the most difficult of economies.

Women take classes in computers, business writing and communication, business math, typing/keyboarding, and office procedures. With the assistance of the school’s Career Services Department, today’s graduates now work for top NYC law firms, corporations, hospitals, universities and nonprofits.

The school is a lifeline for bright, determined women who have been previously underemployed at dead-end, low-wage jobs because of their lack of skills. The only requirements to apply are a high school diploma or GED, permission to work in the United States, and English fluency. “The average student comes to Grace earning a mere $6,000 a year without benefits and graduates after just four and a half months to enter a job earning $32,000 a year plus benefits,” said Grace Institute’s Executive Director Mary Mulvihill. “That’s a significant impact — and students don’t pay any tuition at all, meaning we can serve women who are typically unable to pursue education at a typical college or university.”

Grace Institute was established in 1897 by William Russell Grace, a successful businessman and twice-elected mayor of New York City, and his brother, Michael, as a tuition-free school for immigrant women. Their goals were simple—to educate and find employment for women who were in need.

For over one hundred years, more than 100,000 women have come through the school’s doors in search of better lives. While the courses offered have changed over the years, the approach and mission has remained the same— to provide tuition-free, practical job training in a supportive learning community for underserved New York area women of all ages and from many different backgrounds.
