Remember, we encompass all levels of education including high school, college, grad school, technical & trade school and even public or private training facilities.

You will notice a new feature called “myOver50 Job Seekers” on the left menu. This is where you will find alumni that have registered on the JobsOver50 portal and have selected your school in the process. You have the option to verify their name, major and graduation year (if applicable). This is not required. However, your verification will give them an edge when applying for a job especially in the vast sea of job seekers that exist today.

The myMessage center is enhanced and a great tool to communicate with students, alumni, 50+ alumni and employers. You can use this feature to confirm academic information, announce events, offer best practices and more.

You will also notice that you can now view job seeker resumes in addition to their profiles. Simply scroll to the bottom of their profile and you will see any resumes they have uploaded to their account. Job seekers now have the ability to make their resumes “public” or “private” at the click of a button.

Great Story Of Accomplishment & Pride at Gibbs College

Their students & alumni have done extremely well thanks to the quality of education at these schools as well as the diligence of their career services staff.

January 8, 2009

“A few years ago it was my pleasure to meet Chelsea Squire in our Sociology course. A young single Mom, on her own, Chelsea struggled with challenges other students did not have. Uncertain employment, lack of a role model in her life outside of school and fear of success were all challenges she faced in her enrollment here at Gibbs College Connecticut. Chelsea overcame these challenges in her life while a student here. When our course together was complete, we maintained contact as she completed the rest of our coursework. She had a second child and kept up with her work thanks to our support.

With a newborn baby at home as well as a 6 year old, Chelsea finished her college coursework and became a graduate.

Upon graduation Chelsea went on a job interview. While she was reluctant to leave her newborn, she no longer suffered from a fear of success. Her coursework with us also influenced her in taking advantage of opportunities that may not have been available when she was “ready”. She prepared for the interview with our Career Services Director, Kathy Trister. Frequent emails and phone calls of encouragement went back and forth prior to the interview. Of course, Chelsea nailed the position and is working in her field. Her uncertain employment situation was resolved, she has many role models and people who support her endeavors. Chelsea’s fear of success and self-esteem are no longer an issue. We are so very proud of Chelsea. Her story is just one example of the change we facilitate for our students and their families.”

Hello Eric,

Our company, GoliathJobs, ran a series of focus groups and panel discussions over the past 2 years on this topic.

Similar to Stephanie’s response below, one of the most common “aggravations” is the volume of resumes received that are not applicable to the job(s) offered. The 2nd most aggravating thing is the volume of inaccurate or embellished resumes.

Many respondents in our studies felt that the ability to help candidates (and ultimately place them) is worth the aggravation. When a candidate has a family, mortgage and educational expenses, it is very gratifying to be able to remove the stress of not being able to meet those obligations.

I think it changes daily, but in this economy, I get a crazy number of unqualified applicants that apply to every job on our board and think they should be interviewed. I have a soul, I understand people are out of work, but I have never, ever hired a VP of a bank to do quality assurance, or a mortgage agent to design software. It’s just not going to happen and it gets frustrating.

There are always a million little things that can be frustrating, but its overridden by the ability to keep hiring in this economy, a candidate (who didn’t get the offer) still thanking you for being their advocate, a hiring manager jumping for joy when the candidate accepts. That’s the stuff that keeps me going, no matter how frustrating those small things might be. Stephanie Macdonald
