Is it Gen X or Gen Y that should be following Baby Boomers?

Yveatte Rothermel on ERE asks the following question:

“I’ve seen many articles and news reports covering this same subject matter in the past year. What I find very interesting is that time and again the point is made that Baby Boomers are ready to retire and Gen Y needs to be ready to step up and take over. Does anyone else find it odd that, for the most part, Gen X, which is behind the Baby Boomer generation and should be the ones taking over Baby Boomer jobs as they retire, are being overlooked or rarely mentioned?”

At GoliathJobs we agree with the point of her question. Baby Boomers that wish to continue working (part-time or full-time) are in the catbird seat in terms of population mass. However, the remaining positions that are opening up should be marketed to Gen X.

The focus for Gen Y is really on internships, entry-level jobs and early management roles, not positions vacated by the 50+ demographic. Many Gen Xers polled on our site have the same concern. They find it troubling that they are frequently overlooked by the HR media.
