Employment Strong in Areas with Good Education
By David Mezzapelle
Successful workforce development in any region hinges on the quality of education. This applies across all ages, education levels and demographics.
Local employers tend to stay in an area, regardless of the cost of living, if their employee base is well-educated and is delivering results. This also tends to attract more employers to a region as well, further lowering unemployment and improving the local economy.
I read an interesting article on the ERE Network written by Ms. Sharib of the New England Recruiters discussion group.
“The latest unemployment figures available from the state indicate that Massachusetts is doing better than the rest of the country and that the western suburbs are doing better still. The Massachusetts unemployment rate is 5.3 percent according to estimates for September released by the state’s Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development. The national average is 6.1 percent. Unemployment for the region inside Interstate 495, which is made up largely of the GlobeWest area, was 4.8 percent. The rate in the Framingham area was lower at 4.3 percent.
The region’s better showing is largely due to its highly educated workforce and the high cost of living, said Maureen Dunne, employment project manager for the MetroWest Economic Research Center at Framingham State College.”
Most of Ms. Sharib’s data comes from a great Boston Globe article titled “Education helps insulate region from jobs.” Read the entire article at:
