Standing Out Among the Sea of Job Seekers

Jennifer Porter, GoliathJobs.comBy Jennifer Porter

Job seekers of all ages are now searching for jobs among many peers doing the same thing. No doubt it is a difficult time to find a job. Pay cuts, reduced or eliminated incentives and massive layoffs are permeating the employment industry. If you want to have an edge you need to think outside of the box, be offensive and consider different ways of marketing yourself.

Standing out can be something as simple as highlighting your resume with accomplishments in past jobs or in school. If your employer had a great 2007 because of an account you landed, don’t be shy - highlight it. If your Lacrosse Team won the state championship and you were a player, highlight that as well. Enthusiasm and past successes can easily be conveyed on paper. And never underestimate the importance of asking someone else to proofread your resume!

GoliathJobs.com offers a free innovative system that allows job seekers to be verified by their school or alma mater, giving them an edge. “Between our verification system and other proprietary career services, we are seeing employers hire the candidates that take these extra steps. Two-thirds of resumes received today are inaccurate and employers don’t have the time to peruse all the inaccuracies. When they see verified resumes come through, they select those first before looking any further,” says David Mezzapelle, Director of Marketing.

ResumeFit.com, for example, is an inexpensive solution that allows you to take your existing resume and have a digital signature encoded directly into the document. Candidate data is certified & protected, giving the employer confidence in the accuracy of your resume. “When an employer is faced with hundreds, possibly thousands of resumes, he or she will only select candidates that stand out. Verifications, certifications, etc all contribute to candidate accuracy thus reducing the screening employers are forced to conduct, ” says Tom Schmidt, President.

Need a staff? Economy making it tough? HIRE INTERNS!

David Mezzapelle, Founder GoliathJobs.comBy David Mezzapelle

Due to the current economic climate, employers should consider hiring interns as a means of building a cost-effective staff that is also extremely motivated. Of course, GoliathJobs can manage that function for them (-:

The benefits are endless. Plus, as things improve, the better performing interns can fill permanent roles post-graduation.

“Internship” is a word that is often used to encompass employment while attending school (or during the summer). The internship is a means of gaining experience in the applicable field of study. Most of the time it implies receiving college credit, in lieu of pay, while gaining real-life experience. In other cases pay is received but at a reduced rate. If no credit is earned the pay scale is generally higher.

Employers benefit greatly. Here are a few of those benefits:

* When employers hire interns, it clearly displays the employer’s involvement in the local community. This is important for corporate development and civic duty.
* Interns are “bright-eyed” and motivated to learn. They want to gain experience towards their career and, quite frankly, need that experience to compete.
* Interns are cost-effective and flexible.
* Top Performers are spotted early and can be groomed for full-time employment later.
* Interns that are hired full time post-graduation have already learned your culture. No need to retrain.
* The surge in the 50+ population is reducing the amount of young people available to fill key roles. By hiring interns and retaining them full-time, you are protecting the long term growth of your workforce.

Hiring interns is no longer reserved for law or healthcare. Internships now exist across all industries including technology, business, education, skilled labor, hospitality and much more. Job seekers & employers have nothing to lose and everything to gain so consider internships today!

ResumeFit! A great service that supports the value of job seeker verification

Michele O'Connor, GoliathJobs.comby Michele O’Connor

We know that employers have the arduous task of reviewing tons of resumes and extrapolating the data they need to make decisions. Unfortunately the job board industry now asserts that 2/3 of resumes received by employers are inaccurate. It is great to know that GoliathJobs is not the only company to care about accurate profile and resume data.

ResumeFit also knows the importance of accurate data and now offers a fantastic service that gives job seekers an edge. Verified data and digital signatures are only part of the improvements that ResumeFit offers to job seekers of all ages. The price point is affordable for anyone and the benefit is priceless.

GoliathJobs envisions that ResumeFit will be the preferred resume format for employers. The best part is that job seekers will still be generating their resumes in MS Word and uploading them the same way on job boards - including GoliathJobs.com & JobsOver50.com!

Here is some specific information directly from ResumeFit. You can always read more on ResumeFit.com as well;

One or Two Page Resume - What’s Better?

Michele O'Connor, GoliathJobs.comby Michele O’Connor

I contributed to a discussion recently on ERE re “One or Two Page Resumes.” This is a common question among job seekers and a genuine concern. They worry that some employers may frown on resumes that extend beyond one page. Job seekers can now put their minds at ease. Here is why;

People over the past 20 years have plowed through more jobs, experience and education than the people in previous decades. No need to assume that you “must” deliver a one page resume.

Our team does assert that students & recent grads should aim for a one page resume that does a good job summarizing personality, experience (i.e. internships/work study) and education. Based on age and experience, young job seekers can easily fit this content onto one page.

Seasoned candidates can easily write a two page resume. There is no reason to be uncomfortable with that. Employers expect it now and they prefer to see well-written detailed experience versus a resume with content jammed onto one page.

Our company, GoliathJobs, provides career services to thousands of schools & alumni associations. We provide major insights into job search, best practices and trends.

Is it Gen X or Gen Y that should be following Baby Boomers?

David Eisner, GoliathJobs.comby David Eisner

Yveatte Rothermel on ERE asks the following question:

“I’ve seen many articles and news reports covering this same subject matter in the past year. What I find very interesting is that time and again the point is made that Baby Boomers are ready to retire and Gen Y needs to be ready to step up and take over. Does anyone else find it odd that, for the most part, Gen X, which is behind the Baby Boomer generation and should be the ones taking over Baby Boomer jobs as they retire, are being overlooked or rarely mentioned?”

At GoliathJobs we agree with the point of her question. Baby Boomers that wish to continue working (part-time or full-time) are in the catbird seat in terms of population mass. However, the remaining positions that are opening up should be marketed to Gen X.

The focus for Gen Y is really on internships, entry-level jobs and early management roles, not positions vacated by the 50+ demographic. Many Gen Xers polled on our site have the same concern. They find it troubling that they are frequently overlooked by the HR media.

“We are really enjoying GoliathJobs, and can you believe our grads are getting the jobs already! We also incorporated this with our students taking the career development class which introduces them to job search techniques. Thank you for all your help and support.” -Lorena Turner, Branford Hall Career Institute (Career Services)

“GoliathJobs is great. Within 5 minutes I was registered and had posted our positions. That same day we started seeing qualified applicants. I also appreciate the simple, user-friendly environment and spam-free communications. The fact that it is free makes it the perfect HR solution for any organization.” -Van Morris, U.S. Microgrid (Employer)

“This is the best job search resource available! In addition to jobs posted on the site by employers everywhere, I can search all the job boards in one location. I recently landed a nursing internship which I am currently enjoying. Now, I am lining up interviews for a full-time job after graduation this May. All through GoliathJobs.” -Jennifer Miller, California State University (Student)

“The thing I enjoy about GoliathJobs is that it gives a good profile of the individual and the school, even if I’m not familiar with them. It’s an added tool that the other (job) boards don’t have. I also like receiving e-mail alerts on who has responded to the job posts.” -Fred Gill, New York Metropolitan Transit Authority MTA (Employer)

“Other job boards don’t deliver the specific benefit that GoliathJobs does. Large job boards like Monster can be unwieldy and pretty unproductive. You can go to Monster and you look up account executive. You get tons of listings, but you can’t verify if they’re real jobs. I believe JobsOver50 will also be a hit since I have received requests from long-graduated alums looking for this type of service.” -Judson Saviskas, Fairfield University Office of Alumni Relations

“I just wanted to let you know that we are getting a lot out of your site. We have been promoting GoliathJobs to students as well as using it for our own information and job postings.” -Krysti O’Rourke, Five Towns College (Career Services)

“I posted a bulletin directing all my friends to your site, all because of your employee Jennifer Porter. She was so amazing. She answered all my questions, helped me and did it in the most caring way. Usually my e-mails to companies are to complain but Mrs. Porter was so great that I thought she deserved the utmost respectively written letter of recognition. I hope she gets recognized for how she goes above and beyond her job duty to make your customers happy.” -Kornelia Rybitwa, New York Institute of Technology (Alumnus)

“I have been promoting GoliathJobs to students on our career service portal. It pleases me to know that a majority of our students are pro-active in gaining information on internships and job opportunities available on your site. I am seeing the volume, it’s a wonderful thing! Thanks for the great site and the recommendations!” -Chris McMahon, Northwood University (Career Services)

“Thank you again for your visit. It was great. GoliathJobs is perfect for our faculty, staff and students!” -Kathy Trister, Gibbs College (Career Services)

You can advertise or find a job and it’s a free service for both parties. You can’t do much better than that!” -Robin Henry, EmploymentOne (Human Resources Specialist)

“I really liked what I saw when I visited GoliathJobs.com. I am interested in expanding my postings to the schools and the other sites that you broadcast to. The more postings I can do the better. Thanks again for responding to me and the help you have given.” -Alaina Toole, PharmaSource Temporary Pharmacy Services (Employer)

“Thanks for your effort again GoliathJobs! You have been by far the most helpful and courteous than any other job hunting website. It has occurred to me that, unlike the others, you actually read the emails I send. Also, I appreciate the fact that jobs are posted by employers directly on GoliathJobs and you have minimized third party sites. I love the fact that I get to check out the employer and their website prior to applying. Too many times I have wasted energy applying for a position to find out it would take over two hours one way to get there just because they don’t want to mention what town the job is in. Albert Einstein once said ‘I am afraid that technology may takeover humanity.’ I see this daily. I’m glad to see that GoliathJobs is using the Internet as a tool and not a replacement for humanity!” -Eric Sumpter, Suffolk Community College (Alumnus)

“Mr. Mezzapelle, you have a high quality staff that exhibits amazing customer service. They should be commended for their courtesy, friendly attitude and follow through. People like these are pearls. I hope they get the recognition they deserve! GoliathJobs Support belongs in the category of ‘above and beyond’. I appreciate the professional courtesy. I sincerely mean that. I’ve been shocked at the lack of courtesy shown while conducting a job search, so this has been a pleasant surprise.” -Laura, Long Island NY (Job Seeker)

“Thank You GoliathJobs, you are AMAZING, you really care. The world needs more like you!” -Ruth Talaiver, Las Vegas NV (Job Seeker)

“Thank you very much for your support. I wanted to let you know that I had sent all of our students an email regarding GoliathJobs.com. One of the first students who went on to your site, and set up her profile, already has an interview this afternoon. She came to me and thanked me for sending the email. Our students are having success with your site and so far I have very positive feedback.” -Tina Moyer, Lehigh Valley College (Career Services)

“The GoliathJobs Support Team walked us through different posting techniques and took the time to post our jobs at dozens of schools and alumni associations. I have never seen support like this from any company anywhere! Thank You GoliathJobs!” -Liza Grant, New York NY (Employer)

Employers Rethink How They Give Feedback - great column.

David Eisner, GoliathJobs.comby David Eisner

“Increased demand for feedback from younger workers is forcing some employers to rethink how they discuss employee performance,” according to the Wall Street Journal this past October.

IBM, Ernst & Young, Accenture and other large organizations are taking the necessary steps to meet the needs of Generation Y, including the way feedback is communicated and addressed. Very interesting as this further displays the unique character of this Generation. Companies need to embrace these personality traits if they wish to hire and retain talent within this demographic. The same theory applies across the 50+ demographic of baby boomers & retirees.

GoliathJobs for students & alumni, and JobsOver50 for baby boomers & retirees, exist as dedicated portals within the applicable demographic because we also understand what makes all these people tick!

Employment Strong in Areas with Good Education

David Mezzapelle, Founder GoliathJobs.comBy David Mezzapelle

Successful workforce development in any region hinges on the quality of education. This applies across all ages, education levels and demographics.

Local employers tend to stay in an area, regardless of the cost of living, if their employee base is well-educated and is delivering results. This also tends to attract more employers to a region as well, further lowering unemployment and improving the local economy.

I read an interesting article on the ERE Network written by Ms. Sharib of the New England Recruiters discussion group.

“The latest unemployment figures available from the state indicate that Massachusetts is doing better than the rest of the country and that the western suburbs are doing better still. The Massachusetts unemployment rate is 5.3 percent according to estimates for September released by the state’s Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development. The national average is 6.1 percent. Unemployment for the region inside Interstate 495, which is made up largely of the GlobeWest area, was 4.8 percent. The rate in the Framingham area was lower at 4.3 percent.

The region’s better showing is largely due to its highly educated workforce and the high cost of living, said Maureen Dunne, employment project manager for the MetroWest Economic Research Center at Framingham State College.”

Most of Ms. Sharib’s data comes from a great Boston Globe article titled “Education helps insulate region from jobs.” Read the entire article at:
http://www.boston.com/business/articles/2008/10/23/education

At GoliathJobs we believe that employment starts with education across all industries, ages and experience levels. This supports our belief.
