It is True, You Only Get One Chance to make a Good First Impression!

The casual nature of today’s job seekers, especially Generation Y, is causing quite a stir among employers & recruiters. Job seekers are attending career fairs in jeans, tee-shirts and even body piercing. This is seen at all types of schools including the top ivy league universities. Even public, non-collegiate, job fairs are allowing job seekers in the door with inappropriate attire.

Contrary to popular opinion among casual life-dwellers, employers & recruiters want to see professionalism at fairs, interviews, etc. Schools need to remind students & alumni of this.

The media tends to portray today’s employers, especially in the tech or advertising sector, as casual. They paint a picture of tech nerds or brainiacs donning a fashionable-grunge attire. That may be the case for some silicon valley start-ups, but job seekers should never assume it early on.
