Support Grows for Disabled Job Seekers - From the Wall Street Journal & GoliathJobs

Michele O'Connor, GoliathJobs.comby Michele O’Connor

“Over the past year, companies have begun taking steps to bring more of the disabled into the professional work force. But building a disability candidate isn’t easy, as firms still lack a centralized talent pool from which to draw,” according to the Wall Street Journal. You can read more at: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121666205789570827.html .

At GoliathJobs, one of our major initiatives is to support disabled job seekers and give them exposure to every conceivable employment option. Through relationships with agencies such as Earnworks, Workplace (Connecticut’s Workforce Development Board) and other organizations, our team works hard to feed opportunities into other portals/agencies that support the disabled. Every job that is posted on our site is also broadcast to this agencies. We see no reason why the volume of jobs being posted with us is not made available to all potential candidates.

Have a nice day!

Randy Pausch May have Died But will Certainly Live On For All of US

Jennifer Porter, GoliathJobs.comBy Jennifer Porter

Randy Pausch died last Friday. Not only was our entire office saddened with his loss, his death rang throughout the world. We knew his disease was terminal, but deep down we hoped he would have a miraculous turn-around.

His optimism, his love for family and his determination were amazing. You can read more about Randy and his passing at http://www.cmu.edu/homepage/beyond/2008/summer/an-enduring-legacy.shtml.

There are multitudes of other sites that describe Randy Pausch and his life as well. One of my favorites is his log. That log is currently available at http://download.srv.cs.cmu.edu/~pausch/news/.

Thank you for reading.

“What are you doing right now?”, “Using GoliathJobs!”

Michele O'Connor, GoliathJobs.comby Michele O’Connor

What am I doing right now? Using GoliathJobs of course!

On a daily basis we are seeing new trends, habits and social behavior taking place. The world is certainly shrinking thanks to technology. Services like GoliathJobs, Facebook, Twitter, mySpace, Linked-In, etc. each offer a unique environment that contributes to the interconnectivity between people, business and cultures.

One of the most common and important public relations tools that all our companies share is the “tell a friend” aspect between our users. Today that is summed up in a simple question which is appearing on social networks everywhere, “What are you doing right now?”

Twitter, for example, is bringing this simple yet powerful question into our cellular phones and PDAs. “Think of Twitter as a social network that lets you tell your friends — or the world — what you are doing at any given time. It also lets you see what everyone else is up to. It’s a kind of worldwide bulletin board of tiny — some say trivial — messages that form a huge mosaic of everyday activity,” says Jefferson Graham at USA Today.

So, whenever you are asked “What are you doing?” be sure to respond “using GoliathJobs.com!”

Here is a great article that appeared in USA Today that discusses the Twitter craze even more:

Finding HR Execs with a wide variety of talents and responsibility

Michele O'Connor, GoliathJobs.comby Michele O’Connor

Some companies have tapped managers from outside human resources to run their HR departments. The shift reflects the increased importance that CEOs and boards place on recruiting, retaining and grooming employees. There is a great article in the Wall Street Journal from Erin White titled “To Find Head of HR…” This article discusses the shift in more detail.

At GoliathJobs, we have been saying this for a long time. HR execs and their teams should be considered one of the most important backbones in an organization. This can make or break a company.

STAMFORD, Conn. June 20, 2008 — David Mezzapelle, Founder & Director of Marketing at GoliathJobs, has been appointed to the Board of The WorkPlace, Inc. The WorkPlace serves as Connecticut’s regional workforce development council and has a national profile.

Joseph M. Carbone (President & CEO), along with Mayor Dan Malloy of Stamford and other state officials, felt that Mezzapelle was a natural fit for this position. “David’s entrepreneurial and innovative spirit, community-minded values and past success make him a clear choice for our board. His vision of the employment sector parallels our mission. The mission of The WorkPlace is to develop a well educated, well trained, and self-sufficient workforce that can compete in the changing global marketplace. Essential to our mission is the creation of a seamless, coordinated system of education, training and employment that is customer centered and easily accessible; meets the needs both of employers for employable people and of persons who face barriers to the kind of employment that provides economic self-sufficiency; has a high level of commitment and collaboration from business, education, government and community agencies including economic development, employment and training, and human services; and has defined goals and performance standards. Mezzapelle has significant experience in all these areas.

Planning and Coordination,
Every few years, The WorkPlace works with a wide scope of business leaders, local officials and other stakeholders to develop a workforce development plan in which Connecticut’s employment needs and interests are identified and addressed. Mezzapelle will continue to serve as Director of Marketing at GoliathJobs and GoliathJobsOver50.

Finally an explanation of “CV” or “Curriculum Vitae”

Jennifer Porter, Media Contact GoliathJobs.comBy Jennifer Porter

We get hundreds of emails every day at GoliathJobs from users looking for tips, advice, best practices, “what if” scenarios, etc. One of the most popular and recent questions is, “What is a CV?”

A “CV” or Curriculum Vitae is a more detailed version of a resume and has become popular in the medical, professional & financial sectors. In somes cases it is requested after a resume. In other cases it is requested in lieu of a resume. The latin meaning is “course of life.”

Here is a link to Wiki resources that pertain to resumes & CVs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curriculum_vit%C3%A6

As Job Boards Restrict Access to Resumes, What Is Your Game Plan?

Jennifer Porter, Media Contact GoliathJobs.comBy Jennifer Porter

In a recent posting on recruitingblogs.com, the question of resume access came up and stirred quite a debate.

Here at GoliathJobs.com we understand both sides of this topic. Several “bad bananas” spoiled the whole bunch. Unfortunately there are issues where organizations will access resumes strictly for spam purposes. It has raised red flags in terms of privacy and has caused many job boards to react. Some have increased the cost to search resumes while others have deleted the feature all together. We are adding the feature in our V2. However, on GoliathJobs all employers are verified giving job seekers peace of mind. That should help to avoid the issue.

Another key point is that we penetrate schools, alumni associations, social networks, professional networks and niche boards. This saves employers & recruiters the work of manually doing it themselves.  The ensuing traffic reduces the need to search resumes.

Avoid Surgeries, Botox, etc - Spruce Up the Resume Instead!

Jennifer Porter, Media Contact GoliathJobs.comBy Jennifer Porter

Why go through all that surgery, hassle, expense and health risk? Just give the resume some Botox! What a great article from Christina Binkley at the Wall Street Journal.

Many of us have heard “it’s all in the presentation.” Or, “You only get one chance to make a good first impression.” Well that is not only true but it also applies to resumes. At GoliathJobs we offer various forms of advice. This is certainly one of them. Watch the video and then click the link to the full article. You will see what i mean.
